ART-1240: Screen Printing
Students learn tools, skills, and procedures needed to produce items of commercial print quality. Students will acquire knowledge of the screen printing processes, methods, and history through the use of lecture topics and activities relating to digital images, image types, color modes, screen preparation, screen printing production, paper ink selection, and general screen printing terminology. It is recommended that students take ART 2412 in the same semester as this course.
Hand Cut Print

Our first assignment started us with the most simple supplies. We made a stencil using a hobby knife to cut away paper. We then printed onto construction paper. We became familiar with the general process and tools of screen printing. It was a great opportunity to make some mistakes on a low stakes, low prep assignment.
Typography Tote Bag

After becoming familiar with the process of screen printing we got to try it on something more typical to the industry. We also had the opportunity to play with type in a design, which would lead well into our future projects which all involved type. It was really nice taking something home at the end of this project that I could give to someone.
Pennant Design

Here we got an opportunity to print something in an irregular shape. We also printed with multiple colors so we got to experiment with aligning our multiple screens to make a quality print. We used a liquid direct emulsion on our screens and exposed them.
Duotone

Here we translated an image into a two color print and added some type. It was a lot of fun to do and interesting to see how the two colors managed to capture the depth, form and shadows. It honestly turned out better than anticipated and I am excited to apply this to some of my future projects, even digitally. We used two screens and the direct liquid emulsion.
T-Shirt Design

This project was a lot of fun and we got to design something we could wear. We also moved on to printing with even more colors, 4 at most this time. I ended up going with 3. Looking at what my classmates chose to do for this assignment was really inspiring and I got a lot of ideas for the potential of this assignment.
Puff

For our puff prints we got to mix the inks with the adulterant ourselves. We practiced the proportions and how to test the ink as part of our proofs. We used a pre-made emulsion that was applied to the screens and then exposed. The texture was really pleasant and that dimensionality can really add to some designs. It got me thinking about how to work it alongside other inks for a very 3d effect.
